Subaru Admits: it Manipulated, What?

By, 2018-05-05

Subaru, a Japanese carmaker, revealed that there is a controversy because of inspections for the second time in less than a year for reports assure that there are manipulations in the inspections data for fuel economy and emissions.

Altering data, according to reports, had been going for years at Subaru plant near Tokyo for some vehicle models as Forester. The manipulating was ongoing for years.

Subaru conducted an investigation instructed by Japan’s transport ministry to know exactly when did it begin and why and it submitted a report after a week. Ministry officials need an assurance to not repeat the same mistakes, so it has to implement a new and effective mechanism.

In Qta, the manipulation of data was occurred there; the same plant had unqualified employees last year when the news revealed the information.

Whether the scandal will affect sails or not it still not known clearly, but in the United States, the biggest market for Subaru, has witnessed some slowing sales.

In the past, some other Japanese carmakers had involved in same scandals; Nissan admitted twice its unqualified inspectors.

The  manipulations Subaru admitted is similar to Volkswagen incident which its scandal was in a larger scale. According to Subaru, the scandal maybe become more clear after the official admission and the reports it submitted.

Subaru admitted its alteration in fuel economy and emission data for 900 cars. It also thinks the manipulation has started since 2002, but it can not prove that since it has just data since 2012.

Depending on the report, the alters were made by inspectors and lower-level managers and the upper management did now what was going on.

The reasons given by the employees prompted them to manipulate the data:

  1. The employees claimed that senior inspectors ordered them to alter the results to match accepted averages.
  2. Inspectors changed the date to make it consistent since Subaru measures values over time or across large number of vehicles.
  3. Adjustment were allowed to account for measurement error, yet the inspectors were suffering from bad training to apply it properly.

The company officially apologized for the manipulation and confirmed that it would do everything to ensure that such mistakes will not be repeated It will punish all those who bear the responsibility for manipulations apologizing for customers, partners and shareholders.
